Bringing Your Pet to Turkey – 2025 Guidelines for Foreigners

Moving to Turkey and wondering if you can bring your furry friend with you? The good news is: yes, you can bring your pet to Turkey, provided that all veterinary and travel procedures are correctly followed. In 2025, Turkey remains a pet-friendly destination, especially in regions like Antalya, Belek, and Fethiye, where many expats enjoy life with their pets.

Here’s what you need to know before traveling.

1. Which Pets Can You Bring to Turkey?

You can bring:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Birds (in limited numbers)

Other animals (e.g., reptiles, rodents) may be subject to special rules or may require additional permits. Always check with your country’s consulate and Turkish customs if you have an exotic pet.

2. Essential Requirements in 2025

To bring a dog or cat into Turkey, you must ensure the following:

Microchip

  • Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit chip
  • The chip should be readable upon arrival

Rabies Vaccination

  • Must be done at least 30 days before travel, and not more than 12 months old
  • Puppies and kittens must be at least 3 months old to receive the vaccine

Health Certificate

  • Issued by an authorized veterinarian in your country
  • Should state your pet is healthy and free from contagious diseases
  • Must be issued within 48–72 hours before travel

Veterinary Passport (Pet Passport)

  • Shows proof of vaccinations, treatments, and identification

Customs Declaration

  • Required if you are traveling with more than 2 pets
  • Additional permits might be needed for multiple animals

3. Arrival in Turkey – What to Expect

  • Pets usually arrive via cargo or cabin, depending on airline policy
  • At Turkish airports (Istanbul, Antalya), pet inspection is conducted by veterinary border control officers
  • As long as documents are valid and your pet appears healthy, the process is smooth and quick

4. Airlines and Transport Tips

  • Most major airlines allow pet travel, either in cabin (small pets) or in hold
  • Check carrier rules, crate dimensions, and required advance notice
  • Book flights with minimum layovers for pet comfort
  • Provide water, absorbent padding, and ID tags

5. Life in Turkey with Pets

  • Pet-friendly accommodation is widely available, especially in Belek, Antalya, Fethiye, and other expat hubs
  • Veterinary clinics are modern and affordable
  • There are many parks, coastal walking areas, and pet shops
  • Some cafes and restaurants allow pets in outdoor areas
